The 2 Episodes of Supergirl That Continue on the Flash
Edit
The Flash (TV Series)
Invasion! (2016)
This marks the first live-action appearance of the future "Hall of Justice", which was the headquarters for the animated series Super Friends (1973).
Kara Danvers' first appearance in the Arrowverse. Though Supergirl (2015) crossed over with The Flash (2014) in "Supergirl: Worlds Finest (2016)", that episode exclusively featured Barry on Kara's Earth, not the other way around.
The image of the STAR Labs Hall and Hangar building that supposedly becomes the Hall of Justice was a CGI manipulation of photos of the old Union Station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The former train station (now a museum) was the inspiration for the Hall of Justice in the original 70's Super Friends (1973) cartoon. When Barry tells Thea he owns the hall and hanger, she tells him he should do something with it which might foreshadow a CW version of "Justice League".
The second of a four night crossover between the CW shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends Of Tomorrow. The crossover began in Supergirl episode 2x8 "Medusa," though that was more of a teaser at the end of the episode (featuring the scene of Barry and Cisco recruiting Supergirl), and continues after the Flash episode in Arrow episode 5x8, also called "Invasion!," and ends with the Legends episode 2x7 "Invasion!"
When Ray explains to Barry about what happened to Snart, you can hear the theme from Legends of Tomorrow episode Marooned when Snart pretended to kill Mick.
Barry tells Kara that she's not the first superhero to be mind-controlled. In the first Flash/Supergirl crossover episode, Kara was dealing with the fallout from being mind controlled by red kryptonite, and Barry recalled when he was controlled in a similar fashion. The latter incident also occurred during a crossover story between the Flash and Arrow.
Joe talks about watching the Sci-Fi channel and learning about aliens. Jesse Martin once portrayed an Alien in the popular series "The X-Files." The episode was titled "The Unnatural" from the sixth season.
Supergirl's universe is officially dubbed "Earth 38", referencing the year that the first superhero comic, "Action Comics", featuring Superman, was published.
In one scene, Heat Wave declares he won't call Kara "Supergirl", and intends to call her the epithet "skirt" instead. Though he doesn't in this episode, he does refer to her that way in the "Legends of Tomorrow" leg of the crossover when he makes a crude romantic pass at her as she prepares to return home.
The aliens in this episode are called the Dominators. In the comics, Barry Allen's children, Don and Dawn (aka the Tornado Twins), died in battle against the Dominators in the 30th century
When Iris discovers that Oliver is Green Arrow, she remarks that he has gotten "so much hotter" in her eyes. This references her attraction to him when they first met during the initial crossover between The Flash and Arrow.
Of the several characters assembled at the de facto "Hall of Justice" during the crossover, Barry Allen (Flash), Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), Cisco Ramon (Vibe), Wally West (Kid Flash), Kara Danvers (Supergirl), Professor Stein (half of Firestorm) and Ray Palmer (Atom) were actually members of the Justice League in the comic books. The others are either non-members or replacement characters created for the series.
Grant Gustin, Stephen Amell, and Melissa Benoist were all the first, among thousands of candidates, to audition for their respective roles. At her casting call, Benoist was actually first by design; she had previously tried out for the role of Oliver's sister Thea and, while it was felt she wasn't quite right for the role, she impressed casting director David Rapaport enough that, when it came time to cast Supergirl (2015), he arranged it so that she was the first actress the producers saw.
When the legends are seen coming out of the temporal zone, the ship that they are seen in a ship similar to the ship Abra Kadabra uses later down season three.
Spoilers
Thea/Speedy told Supergirl that she heard she was "stronger than a locomotive." This is in reference to the introduction of the 1940s "Superman" radio program.
Oliver and Diggle learn about Barry creating the Flashpoint timeline, and that Dig's son John, Jr. used to be his daughter Sara.
Barry explains to Lyla that the aliens would give Ridley Scott nightmares, referring to the fact that Scott directed Alien (1979).
Oliver offers his support to Barry regarding the latter's attempt to change the timeline to save his parents, saying that he would do the same thing that Barry did. In the next episode of the crossover, Oliver gets to experience a similar timeline where his own parents are still living.
After the President is taken from the motorcade Lyla states "the traveler was taken." The Traveler is a title for Superman during the Smallville tv series.
